ATARA Amateur Radio License Testing
It is our goal at ATARA to make your testing experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Our exam team uses HamStudy.org / ExamTools for registration and exam delivery, making the process fast, efficient, and fully digital.
Registering for an Exam Session
Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration is encouraged for a more streamlined experience.
To pre-register:
- Visit https://hamstudy.org/sessions
- Search for ATARA or W8ATR
- Select your preferred session and complete the online registration
No paperwork is required—HamStudy handles everything electronically.
What You Need for Test Day
Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration is encouraged for a more streamlined experience.
1. A Valid Photo ID
- A state or federal photo ID is required.
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult with a valid ID.
2. An FCC FRN (Required)
- All candidates must have an FCC Registration Number (FRN) before taking an exam.
- You do not need to bring anything printed—the FRN simply must exist in the FCC system.

Upgrading Your License
If you are already licensed, no printed copy of your current license is needed.
HamStudy/ExamTools automatically verifies your license status when you register.
Exam Fees
- $15 testing fee for your first attempt
- Additional Elements may be taken at no extra charge during the same session
- Retaking a failed Element costs $15 per attempt
